Connecting infrastructure with innovation.

Our Vision

Our vision is to create an integrated aviation fuel ecosystem where commercial infrastructure and clean fuel innovation work together. The East Midlands Pipeline provides secure fuel supply to East Midlands Airport, while our Innovation & Blending Hub accelerates the commercialisation of next-generation of SAF.

Building the Future of Sustainable Aviation Fuel in the East Midlands.

The aviation energy transition represents one of the greatest industrial and infrastructure opportunities facing the United Kingdom.  As Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) mandates increase and energy security becomes a national priority, airports require reliable, scalable and cost-effective access to both conventional aviation fuel and future low-carbon alternatives.

East Midlands Pipeline Ltd (EMP) is developing one of the UK's most significant sustainable aviation fuel infrastructure projects. By recommissioning an existing 63km underground pipeline, we are creating a secure aviation fuel corridor to East Midlands Airport alongside a world-class Innovation & Blending Hub that will accelerate the commercial production of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) and synthetic SAF (eSAF).

This is a unique opportunity to establish the UK's first integrated aviation fuel security and sustainable aviation ecosystem.

Our Plan

The project will be delivered through a dual track model:

Commercial Infrastructure – delivering a fully operational underground pipeline to East Midlands Airport, enhancing fuel security, removing tankers from the road and reducing logistics costs.

Innovation & Blending – establishing regional SAF and eSAF production through emerging Biomass-to-Liquid/Power-to-Liquid technologies and nuclear enabled technologies.

By recommissioning this existing pipeline and constructing a short extension, we create a secure, resilient and cost-effective aviation fuel supply route to East Midlands Airport.

With capacity far exceeding the airport's future fuel demand, the pipeline provides a long-term strategic asset capable of transporting conventional

Jet A-1, Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF/eSAF) and  supporting future Sustainable Aviation Fuel production, blending and distribution. By replacing thousands of annual road tanker movements, the project will improve fuel security, reduce emissions, ease road congestion and provide the backbone for the UK's next generation of sustainable aviation fuel infrastructure.

Why Our Project is Different

Infrastructure first.

Innovation second.

 Growth for decades.

Unlike many clean energy projects, EMP begins with commercially viable infrastructure.

Early revenues generated through aviation fuel transportation create the platform for future investment into sustainable fuel production, making the project lower risk and highly scalable.

Driving Investment, Innovation & Industrial Growth

The East Midlands Pipeline project will establish the region as a nationally significant centre for Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) production, innovation and commercialisation. By combining strategic infrastructure with an open-access Innovation & Blending Hub, the project will attract investment, support technology developers and create new opportunities across the clean aviation sector.

The project will strengthen the competitiveness of East Midlands Airport, encourage collaboration between industry, universities and research organisations, and accelerate the commercial deployment of emerging low-carbon fuel technologies. By creating a permanent ecosystem for innovation and advanced manufacturing, EMP will help position the East Midlands at the forefront of the UK's transition to cleaner, more resilient aviation by strengthening the UK's domestic fuel capability.

COMMERCIAL RECOMMISSIONING & AVIATION FUEL CORRIDOR

Delivering Secure Aviation Fuel Infrastructure

The Commercial Infrastructure business model focuses on recommissioning the existing 63km East Midlands Pipeline and extending it to East Midlands Airport, creating a secure underground aviation fuel corridor from Kingsbury Oil Terminal. This strategic infrastructure will provide a resilient, cost-effective supply route for Jet A-1 and Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), reducing reliance on road tanker deliveries while improving fuel security and operational resilience.

The recommissioned pipeline forms the commercial foundation of the wider project, generating early revenues while supporting the UK's SAF Mandate and future aviation growth. With significant spare capacity beyond the airport's projected fuel demand, the pipeline also provides the strategic infrastructure needed to support the Innovation & Blending Hub, enabling the transportation of Jet A-1 for blending with locally produced SAF and eSAF before delivery to East Midlands Airport or the wider UK fuel network.

Why Recommissioning Our Pipeline Makes Sense

Reduced Environmental Impact

Building new causes substantial environmental disruption (habitat loss and fragmentation, CO₂ emissions from construction, negative biodiversity impact and potential pollution).

Our underground pipeline route is already established under the Pipelines Act and is fully maintained, minimising new disturbance and eliminating decades of ecological recovery typically required for new builds.

Strategic Asset Reuse

Our Pipeline is a rare, high-integrity asset with ideal geographic positioning, spanning Freeports, industrial users, key feedstock producers and clean energy growth zones.

Its reuse aligns with circular economy principles and government policy promoting infrastructure optimisation. Recommissioning and connection to East Midlands Airport will take around 2 years to deliver as fully operational infrastructure.

Faster Delivery

Faster Delivery

Repurposing an existing pipeline enables aviation fuel infrastructure to be delivered years faster than constructing a completely new pipeline, reducing cost, planning complexity and environmental impact.

We expect to be operational in 2 years.

Innovation & Blending Hub

Accelerating the Future of Sustainable Aviation Fuel

The East Midlands Innovation & Blending Hub will be a nationally significant centre for the development, demonstration and commercialisation of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) and synthetic aviation fuel (eSAF). Designed as an open-access facility, it will provide technology developers with shared infrastructure, utilities and blending facilities to accelerate the transition from laboratory research to commercial-scale production.

A key advantage of the Hub is its direct connection to the East Midlands Pipeline. Jet A-1 will be transported  to the Hub, blended with locally produced SAF or eSAF, certified to aviation standards and delivered directly to East Midlands Airport or back into the national fuel distribution network via the Kingsbury Oil Terminal. This creates a unique, commercially viable route to market for emerging fuel technologies while strengthening the UK's domestic aviation fuel supply chain.

Utilising Sustainable Feedstocks

The Innovation & Blending Hub has been strategically located to take advantage of a diverse range of regional feedstocks, enabling multiple production pathways and supporting a technology-neutral approach to sustainable aviation fuel production.

Feedstocks available to the Hub include:

  • Water abstracted from River Trent
  • Green hydrogen produced using emerging technologies
  • Captured carbon dioxide (CO₂) from regional industrial sources
  • Biomethane from anaerobic digestion plants
  • Biogas from agricultural and waste treatment facilities
  • Digestate from organic waste processing
  • Sewage sludge as a renewable feedstock resource
  • Waste plastics suitable for advanced conversion technologies
  • Future low-carbon hydrogen from advanced production pathways, including nuclear-enabled hydrogen

Shared Infrastructure

By integrating these feedstocks within a shared infrastructure, the Hub will support multiple eSAF production technologies, encourage innovation, reduce development costs and establish the East Midlands as a leading centre for sustainable aviation fuel production and commercialisation.

become a Technology Partner

Shaping the Future of Sustainable Aviation Fuel

EMP is actively engaging with technology developers, innovators and industrial partners interested in locating within the East Midlands Innovation & Blending Hub. We are evaluating a wide range of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), eSAF and hydrogen-based technologies for both commercial-scale production and demonstration projects that support the commercialisation of emerging innovations.

Our ambition is to create a collaborative, technology-neutral ecosystem where multiple compatible technologies can co-locate, share infrastructure and utilities, and benefit from direct access to blending facilities and a commercial route to market via the East Midlands Pipeline.

As part of this process, we are undertaking a comprehensive feasibility study in partnership with the University of Nottingham to assess technology readiness, feedstock requirements, infrastructure needs and opportunities for integration within the East Midlands Innovation & Blending Hub. If you are developing innovative SAF, eSAF, hydrogen or low-carbon fuel technologies and would like to explore becoming part of this exciting project, we would love to hear from you.
